The Memrec treatment for phobias

Phobias develop when the brain links a situation or object with fear. Memrec is a carefully structured 2-session treatment designed to directly reduce the underlying fear response.

Scientific origin of the Memrec method

Kindt Clinics was founded by Professor Merel Kindt, Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Amsterdam.

Her research into fear memory forms the scientific foundation of the Memrec method. While traditional cognitive behavioural therapy typically relies on gradual, repeated exposure to reduce fear over time, her work showed that under specific conditions learned fear responses themselves can become open to change.

At Kindt Clinics, these insights are translated into a focused clinical treatment for phobias: Memrec – a short, structured approach designed to reduce fear more directly.

How does the Memrec treatment work?

To understand why the Memrec treatment can be effective for phobias, it helps to look at what happens in the brain. The animation below explains the core principle behind the Memrec treatment.

The treatment approach

Memrec follows a fixed protocol, delivered over two consecutive days, with close personal guidance throughout.

Clear structure

A structured treatment trajectory with a fixed scope and clear process.

Two sessions

Two on-site sessions on two consecutive days, supported by an online intake and follow-up.

Specialised guidance

Closely guided by clinical psychologists specialised in phobias.

Medical screening

The Memrec treatment involves the one-time use of a beta-blocker. This pill has a long track record of safe medical use, and suitability is always checked carefully in advance.

This single dose helps change how the fear memory is stored, leading to a lasting reduction in fear.

As part of the intake process, a GP carries out a medical screening to determine whether the beta-blocker can be used safely.

Who is this treatment suitable for?

Type of fear

Almost all specific fears and phobias, including fears related to needles (trypanophobia), sick (emetophobia), heights, (acrophobia), animals (e.g. musophobia and arachnophobia), and enclosed spaces (claustrophobia).

Works best when

The fear is clearly defined and linked to a specific trigger.

Careful selection

Suitability is assessed during the free introductory call and intake. We move forward only when you and our team feel confident that this approach is right for you.

Outcomes in practice

The aim of the Memrec treatment is to reduce fear so you no longer feel the urge to avoid.
"Very positive. The sessions are intense, but the guidance is excellent, and the results are extremely good. I am super happy with the outcome and proud of what I have accomplished together with Kindt Clinics."
- Bart
Fear of heights
"Family and friends are incredibly enthusiastic about my bizarre and rapid "recovery". I now go through life much more relaxed because I no longer have the fear of losing control when I see a spider."
- Miel
Fear of spiders

What to expect as a result

It can be hard to imagine that fear can disappear, especially when it has been part of your life for a long time.

Yet this is often exactly what happens. During the second session, most people immediately experience that the intense fear is gone. You may still feel some tension, but panic no longer occurs.

In most cases, one treatment cycle (2 sessions) is sufficient. A small proportion of people benefit from a second treatment.

This short excerpt from the documentary Memory Hackers shows how the scientific principles behind the Memrec method were developed. While each treatment is different in practice, the video provides context on the research that led to this approach.
